Rainbow Heart Quilt Pattern

Finished

Following the Orlando masacre, I wanted to make a rainbow heart quilt, but couldn’t find a pattern for the one I wanted to do, just pictures of something similar. Due to the simplicity of strips, I decided to make my own pattern based on a grid.

I started by ordering a jelly roll of rainbow fabric. You could use 2-1/2″ strips from your stash as well. You will need 38 different colored fabrics. (jelly roll comes with 41)

I drew up a grid based on each square being 2″ finished. I added 1/2″ to the strips for seam allowance. In the grid you will see numbers in the grid. Those numbers are the size that each strip needs to be cut in inches.Heart Grid Edited

I laid out my fabric by color, keeping like colors together.

Using 1/4 seam allowance, I sewed each strip together. (For example, Blue, Pink, Blue) After ironing seams, I sewed the completed strips to one another with 1/4″ seam allowances, making sure to line them up carefully.

This resulted in a top that was ~38″ x 50″. I wanted a finished size of ~48″ x 60″, so I added black borders. The borders are each 5.5″ wide, 5″ finished.

I finished the quilt by backing in the same black fabric and quilting with rainbow thread in a “Love” pattern throughout. I bound it with leftover strips.

  1. I saw this quilt on Facebook and had to have it. The quilter was gracious and gave me where to find it. I read over the directions and am thrilled. Can hardly wait to start it. Thank you.
